I just got back from Sutton a little while ago. I went up yesterday around 9:30. It was really fun! Dustin and I hung out for a little bit and played Guitar Hero. Then we called up Nathan to come over, and we watched No Country for Old Men. Around 5, we went to Blake's to pick him up and we headed to Dave and Buster's in Providence. Dustin and Nate kept getting jackpots on all the games, and I kept failing miserably. My 592 tickets were nothing compared to their 900 and 1500 tickets haha. We ended up just giving them all to Nate since it was his birthday thing. But we each got a shot glass. Then we left and went back to Blake's for a little bit. Then we went back to Dustin's and ate some left over pizza and bananas haha. Around 11:30, Nathan left, and we got ready for bed. Woke up at like 9:00 this morning, and left for the Cape around 10:30. I wish I could have stayed longer, but we'll see each other in two days! Unfortunately, it will never be just us. Oh, college life.
Today, Mom and I did some school shopping. I came home, ate a sandwich, read, and took a nap. Then I went over Tara and Kristina's and we all went to Adventure Isle. The place sucks even more than it used to. We did the bumper boats and the go karts. Then we went to Falmouth mainstreet and at at Liam's Pub. We met an interesting guy there with his 7 year old daughter. He definitely had some issues going on. Then we walked along the beach in Falmouth Heights. It was a pretty good night. Oh! I was a traitor, and went to Inkwell, and got this new biography on Hawthorne that is supposedly amazing. The author was at that bookstore yesterday. I missed it. But I can't wait to read the book.
I think it was time for a new LJ icon. I just finished No Country for Old Men. It was SUCH a great book. The movie did it so much justice too. Whoever wrote the screenplay and directed it did a great job. I hope The Road movie is just as good. Yes, they're turning that book into a movie as well. Viggo is playing the dad. I saw a picture in E weekly and it looks NOTHING like him haha.
That's all for now!
I passed the MTELS!! I haven't gotten the official scores in the mail yet, but they sent me an email saying:
001 Communication and Literacy Skills: Reading Subtest
Status: Met the Qualifying Score
Minimum Qualifying Score: 240
------------------------------
001 Communication and Literacy Skills: Writing Subtest
Status: Met the Qualifying Score
Minimum Qualifying Score: 240
Today was my last day of work for the summer. YAY and BOO at the same time. I have no moneys. Tonight, Katie and Josh came over and we went to mainstreet and walked around, then we drove around and talked. Overall, a good night.
Tomorrow, I think mom and I are doing some school shopping!
I feel really weird right now. Like I'm living in a daze. Or just a really sad monotonous life. Everything is so goddamn structured. I just want a little surprise in my daily life. I dunno. Anything.
Dan McGuire and Paul Conlon have both been killed in Iraq in the past two days. Dan was two days ago, and Paul was either last night or this morning. It's ridiculous. Dan was in the grade below me, and Paul in the grade above. I was more friends with Paul, but I feel bad for both of their families. I don't want to go into a political rant, but I just know that my hatred for the war right now is more real than it has ever been. There's truly a different perspective when people you know get killed. I hope Adam Barker is okay over there, because he has a wife and a kid waiting for him home.
So, I work 9-5 until Friday haha. Lisa's punishing me for leaving for school. She has Josh working 6 days in a row, too. Oh well. 8 more days. Just 8 more days.
There's nothing else to update.
Heathcliff died today. I picked up his house so that I could pet him, but when I lifted the house up he wasn't breathing. So I touched him and he was stiff as a board. Poor little guy! He was curled up and looked peaceful, so I hope he died in his sleep, and without pain. So I put him in the shoebox that belonged to my most expensive pair of shoes, and buried him in the yard.
RIP! I believe a Wuthering Heights quote is only appropriate here:
Finding the correspondence letters between Melville and Hawthorne would be a dream come true.
I'm reading a book called The Secret of Lost Things by Sheridan Hay. It's about a rare and used bookstore who gets their hands on a story written by Melville called The Isle of the Cross that was otherwise known as nonexistent, or even lost. Now, apparently, this work of fiction really had existed at one point in time.
Melville, in my opinion, had a hero worship of Hawthorne (who wouldn't). He constantly wrote intimate letters to him declaring how talented and smart Hawthorne was. I've read some of their letters and noticed that Melville was obviously extremely lonely and found a confidant in Hawthorne, even though Hawthorne was like 15 years older than Melville. Hawthorne's replies to Melville's letters seemed almost passive, maybe even disgusted. Obviously Hawthorne did not approve of homosexuality, just taken straight evidence from his novels, but I really think Melville was bisexual. Maybe even homosexual. Being married with children didn't mean anything back then haha. Anyway, what the fuck was my point...
OH! Ok, so there is this one letter than Melville wrote to Hawthorne chronicalling this lawyer he met and a story that the lawyer "gave" to Melville. The story was an actual work experience that the lawyer had. The details aren't that important, except the letters are called "The Agatha Letters." Melville wrote to Hawthorne and vehemently asked him to write this story. This is where it gets weird because Melville gives him so many "suggestions" for the story, such as plot, names, places, etc. Why wouldn't Melville just write this story in the first place? I think that Melville wanted Hawthorne to write him a story. I think he wanted to be apart of Hawthorne some how, and through this story he could be. Hawthorne wrote back in a strange manner, unlike his other letters. He wrote a short and sweet reply basically telling Melville to write it himself since he already had most of the details. Melville then replied:
My dear Hawthorne,--
The other day, at Concord, you expressed uncertainty concerning your undertaking the story of Agatha, and, in the end, you urged me to write it. I have decided to do so, and shall begin it immediately upon reaching home; and so far as in me lies, I shall endeavor to do justice to so interesting a story of reality. Will you therefore enclose the whole affair to me; and if anything of your own has occurred to you in your random thinking, won't you note it down for me on the same page with my memorandum? I wish I had come to this determination at Concord, for then we might have more fully and closely talked over the story, and so struck out new light. Make amends for this, though, as much as you conveniently can. With your permission I shall make use of the "Isle of Shoals," as far as the name goes at least. I shall also introduce the old Nantucket seaman, in the way I spoke to you about. I invoke your blessing upon my endeavors; and breathe a fair wind upon me. I greatly enjoyed my visit to you, and hope that you reaped some corresponding pleasure.
H. Melville
Julian, Una, and Rose, my salutations to them.
So, does this story exist somewhere in the lost archives of history! In a more modern tone, WHERE THE FUCK IS THIS STORY! I want to read it! Now, there is a story called The Norfolk Isle and the Chola Widow, which I have not read yet. But some say that this is a watered down rewrite of his original story.
Is this not beyond interesting.... or am I just a humongous nerd. Never mind, don't answer that! :P
And in the closing words of Melville, "I dont know when I shall see you. I shall lay eyes on you one of these days however. Keep some Champagne or Gin for me."
Haven't posted in a while. Nothing noteworthy has really happened. I went to a party at Danny and Mary's house with my parents. Anna Smith was there so we drank some margaritas. I've been working a lot, and reading a lot. Katie, Josh, and I have hung out a little bit. We watched The Mist the other night, and a few nights before that, Katie and I watched 2 scary movies. I went for an eye exam today. My prescription went up a little bit, and I had to get a new brand of contacts, but all in all, it was fine. My mouth splint thing seems to sort of help my jaw, but it's still sore, and I still can't open it all the way. I'm beginning to think it's a VERY long process. But as long as I can give adequate blowjobs, who cares. ;)
Tomorrow is my day off! I'm so so so so so sick of tourists!!! I really wish the bridges would just fucking collapse while they were on them. I don't understand why the majority of the people who vacation on the cape are preppy parents with extremely annoying and spoiled little toddlers. Ugh, I hate this place. I can't wait to move off of this island. It's even more annoying because they really think we live to serve them. Because.... we really don't. And you know what, I'd rather you never come again and support our economy. That way, it'd force my parents to move! Locals can't do one thing without getting stuck in traffic, almost into car accidents because people don't know where they're going or how to use a rotary, asked directions, or stuck in line behind people who are too happy to be waiting in a huge line for ice cream. Not to mention that they take all the parking spaces at work! AHHHHHHHHHH. *shoots tourists*
Ok, I'm done rambling.
So, I went to the dentist today to get my jaw reset. It turns out that my jaw was already pretty much on it's way to going back to normal. The dentist had me open my mouth and when he saw how wide I could open it, he was like, "OH MY GOSH!" When I first came to visit him like a week and a half ago, I could only open it about 20 mm. The normal is 40 mm. I guess today I started at 33 mm. So, he said that he was going to be "conservative" and not give me any Novocaine or laughing gas. So I got a little nervous because I can't do any dental work without my laughing gas. But he just wiggle my jaw a little bit, pushed it around, told me to move it in certain ways, and we measured it a few more times and it gradually kept getting up. So at the end of the procedure, I could open it about 39 mm. YAY! I also only have to wear the retainer thing when I'm sleeping, instead of all day 24/7. AND the best part is that I don't have to be on a liquid diet!!!
This is all thanks to Dustin!
